Historic Detroit bank offers virtual financial wellness series for free

DETROIT – A historic Metro Detroit bank expands services to educate more people about financial literacy.

The First Independence Bank offers a virtual workshop on financial literacy. In the past it was more difficult for black people to get access to money.

Founded in Detroit, First Independence Bank was the first black-owned bank in Michigan.

“There were a few additions, but it wasn’t as much as we needed,” said Dimitrius Hutcherson of First Independence Bank. “We were the place to go.”

The bank has grown since it was founded in 1970. Today it is a full-service bank with three locations and partnerships with larger banks.

“First Independence Bank is a financial services company founded in 1970,” said Hutcherson. “Customers of all kinds.”

It’s not just about how much money you make and where you put it – something that isn’t taught often in schools. And for minorities just struggling to get into the game, financial literacy hasn’t always been a focus when it comes to making enough money to survive.

“People tend to live more day-to-day or paycheck to paycheck,” said Gina Coleman, CSO of MassMutual Great Lakes. “They feel like we paid the bills so that we could be good.”

That’s why MassMutual Great Lakes and First Independent Bank have teamed up to offer lessons in financial literacy. The series is offered via Zoom and is free for anyone interested.
