In Focus: COVID-19 and Variants, Back to School, Financial Wellness Program, New Technology for ALS

In Focus, PHL17’s long-running community program, which will air on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 6:30 a.m. and on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at 1 p.m., we focus on education. First, we start our show with an expert in vaccines and disease prevention and treatment. Dr. David Weiner, Director of the Center for Vaccines and Immunotherapy at the Wistar Institute, joins us. We speak to him about the news that the FDA has given Pfizer’s COVID vaccine full approval. And we talk to Dr. Weiner about some school districts and vaccination centers. He also tells us about the Delta and Lambda variants.

Next, in Focus, many students are returning to their classrooms in person this year after virtually studying at home due to the pandemic. For some of the youngest students, it is their first visit to school in the classroom. John Vacca, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Teacher Education at Saint Joseph’s University shares some strategies to help prepare students for the school year. Talking to us about a framework called “The 3-R’s – Revisiting, Review and Revitalize”.

Then, between college loans and spending, financial health is so important to the students. And an organization in our area deals with it. The Historically Black Colleges & Universities Community Development Action Coalition launches “Our Money Counts”. Temple Jackson is the program manager and tells us how the program gets started at several HBCUs, including Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Jackson says some students are facing food and housing insecurity and are affected by the pandemic. Organizers say the program is a $ 5.6 million initiative funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation and says it takes a holistic approach to helping students who may be with college debt as well are facing financial difficulties and trying to increase the chances of financial success.

In addition, modern technology makes it easier for ALS patients to maintain communication with their fellow human beings. And this technology could soon reach anyone with ALS in New Jersey. Jason Lee of PHL17 has the story.

In Focus airs on Saturdays at 6:30 a.m. and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. on PHL 17. Find essential information on community affairs and hear from people from across the Delaware Valley.
