Inspiring Community Through Spiritual Wellness
The wellness industry is booming. According to the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness economy is a $ 4.2 trillion industry in 2018 and growing. That’s trillions. With.
Every day, more and more people are turning to alternative and complementary medicines, aromatherapy, and metaphysical services for happier and healthier lives.
Here in Shreveport, the growing demand for such goods and services is primarily met by the Peace of Mind Center team, led by owner Gena White, who works every day to provide holistic and metaphysical resources to our community.
Since 1999, the Peace of Mind Center has served Shreveport and the surrounding areas with wellness products, solutions and other resources. This includes products like books, crystals and essential oils, body treatments like Himalayan salt massage and Reiki, and metaphysical services like astrology readings. They also regularly host speakers and classes to educate the community about spirituality and wellness. It is the only store of its kind in the region.
Originally from Georgia, Gena not only grew up in an area where metaphysical business is normal, but she was with her mother who kept metaphysical books and materials all over her home.
Gena remembered one particular store in Georgia, The Phoenix and The Dragon, where she said to the girl at the counter, “If I ever had a store, it would be a store like this.”
Gena moved to Shreveport in 1998. Before moving, she ran a successful glass business, but because she was pregnant at the time, she quit for health reasons. A car accident also left Gena with constant back pain.
It was at this point that Gena began to seriously consider running a metaphysical center in Shreveport. Just as quickly, she received signs that she should move the idea forward. She received a metaphysical retail product magazine called New Age Retail (now Retail Insight) and a letter for a 12-week business class from the Small Business Association.
Gena called every retailer in the magazine to tell them she was opening a store in Shreveport and was going through Small Business Class. Throughout the process she kept a mantra to herself: “The flow of abundance is infinite; I receive my abundance from the universe in a gentle and graceful way. “
“I didn’t even have a place. I didn’t have any inventory. I just had a vision, ”said Gena. She stayed true to that vision. She got a small business loan from her bank, found a furnished location for her business, and had a team of supportive family members and staff who helped make it a reality within a year.
Gena believes that education about wellness and spirituality will help the people of Shreveport have better and broader views of the world and themselves. “It can add to your religion or definitely improve your spirituality, but the only thing it will surely do is make you a better person.
The Peace of Mind Center team has been working hard to bring products, services, courses, and more to Shreveport and have done so for 20 years.
“People will say, ‘How long have you been in business?’ and expect us to say like a month, six months, a year. When we say 20 years they almost fall to the ground, especially when they come from Shreveport because people really find us when they are ready. “
On her 20th birthday in April, the Peace of Mind Center team celebrates the community that has supported them over the years. Special events, courses and speakers take place throughout the month. Gena says that the focus of all celebrations is their customers.
“When we have birthday parties, it’s not about all the speakers and all that. It’s about making raffle cards, making food, doing fun things, doing discounts. Without the community to support us, we couldn’t involve speakers. We couldn’t have the latest metaphysical tools. We couldn’t get giant stones from Tuscon unless people came requesting these things, so we really do it through them. “
She also expressed immense gratitude and respect for her dedicated staff from business partners, practitioners and massage therapists. “Everyone who works here is committed. Everyone who works here wants to do the best possible job. They want to bring quality things to the community. “
The well being of the body, mind and spirit is such an important and necessary aspect in creating a strong and healthy Shreveport. As the wellness industry continues to grow and improve, it’s comforting to know that Gena and the Peace of Mind Center team are so committed, now and in the future, to being a resource here.
